Quick facts

What is this book?

It is the main maths book that a Class 2 student works from all year. Numbers, shapes and operations are taught through things a seven-year-old can picture, and the chapter order follows how children actually meet arithmetic.

Why the order suits Class 2

  1. Place value comes first, because every later chapter depends on hundreds, tens and ones.
  2. Addition shows both cases: first without regrouping, then with, so the harder step is never met cold.
  3. Multiplication is repeated addition and counting in steps, and division is repeated subtraction and jumps on a number line, so each new operation grows from the previous one.
  4. The later chapters apply number sense to the real world: how heavy, how much, how hot, what time it is, what shape, and how to read a chart.

Word problems in the multiplication chapter and the practical topics in measurement and time give parents easy ways to practise at home, such as telling the time on the kitchen clock or working out how many chairs there are in three rows of four.
