What the Class 4 notebook list asks for

Class 4 is where the notebooks become large. The school list shows eight: two four-lined (large), one small-square (large), one four-lined interleaf (large), three broad-lined (large) and one drawing notebook.

The interleaf notebook is the new item. It has a plain leaf between the ruled leaves, so a child can paste a picture, draw a diagram or add a note next to the written work. The small-square notebook is for maths work with columns and diagrams.

Class 4 is a step up in size: the notebooks turn large, and the interleaf notebook makes its first appearance. Across the whole school list that we photographed (Early Years Stage 2, Pre I and Class I to Class X) the number of notebooks rises from 3 to about 10 or 11.

Larger notebooks allow longer writing and neater diagrams. Teachers often use the plain leaf of an interleaf notebook for a drawing, a map or a pasted picture opposite the written work. The small-square notebook helps with maths columns, tables and graphs, which become more common in Class 4.

Small habits that matter

Check that the large notebooks fit the school bag before the first day.
Keep the interleaf notebook for the subject where pictures or diagrams are needed most.
Use a ruler and a pencil for the squares and keep the margin straight.
