What is this book?

Eleven chapters cover the whole of Class 4 science: life processes, plants and animals, first aid, ecosystems, matter, energy, forces and simple machines, technology, the Earth and its resources, and the solar system. The order moves from the child's own body outward to the planet and beyond, which keeps a nine- or ten-year-old curious.

Science you can do at home

Almost every chapter turns into a small activity:

• Grow a bean seed in a jar and draw it every few days.
• Walk to a pond or a park and look for ways that animals are suited to where they live.
• Test which objects float and which sink.
• Make a ramp from a tray and a book and roll toy cars down it to learn about force.
• Watch the Moon for a week and draw its shape each night.

First aid is a life skill

Chapter 4 is short and practical. Knowing what to do for a cut, a burn or a nosebleed is useful for life, and it is part of the Class 4 science course. Practise the steps calmly at home so that the child feels confident, not frightened.
