What is this book?
In Class 4 science stops being a collection of simple observations and starts to look at how things work. The ice cubes on the cover are a good picture of the book: matter that can be solid or liquid, and a reminder that science is about testing and asking questions. The book follows the Single National Curriculum 2020 and uses the "Nature Lab" name for the practical, hands-on approach.
The ten chapters make a clear journey. It starts with life science (how plants are built, how animals are sorted into groups and how living things depend on each other in an ecosystem), moves to physical science (matter, light and sound, heat and electricity, forces and machines) and ends with technology and the Earth (technology in everyday life, the Earth and its resources and the solar system).
The contents page gives only the chapter titles and starting pages, so this page describes the book at that level and does not invent the lessons inside each chapter.

The chapters in four groups
Living things (chapters 1 to 3, pages 1–71). Plants (27 pages) are the biggest chapter of this group, followed by the classification of animals and the ecosystem. Together they fill about a third of the book.
Matter and energy (chapters 4 to 6, pages 72–126). Matter and its characteristics, light and sound, and heat and electricity. These are the chapters where Class 4 children do simple experiments with ice, torches, mirrors, sound and circuits.
Forces and technology (chapters 7 and 8, pages 127–167). Forces and machines is the longest chapter in the whole book with 29 pages, followed by a short chapter on technology in everyday life.
The Earth and space (chapters 9 and 10, pages 168 onwards). The Earth and its resources, and the solar system, which closes the year.
Why this book?
- It follows the Single National Curriculum 2020 and the cover says so.
- The book moves from living things to matter, energy and the Earth, which is the natural order for Class 4.
- The colour-coded contents make it easy for a child to find the chapter with a parent.
- It is on the Allied School Class 4 list and also useful as a general Class 4 science book.
Who is it for, and when is it used?
Who: Class 4 children at Allied School and other schools that use AEP | Arvo Education Press books. When: through the school year, one chapter at a time. Chapters 1 to 3 are usually the first term, chapters 4 to 6 the middle and chapters 7 to 10 the last term. Why the page numbers matter: chapters are 12 to 29 pages long, so a parent can see that chapter 7 (forces and machines, page 127) needs the most time.
How to help at home
- Grow a bean or a cress seed on wet cotton and draw the plant every two days (chapter 1).
- Make a poster that sorts animals into groups: fish, birds, mammals, reptiles (chapter 2).
- Put an ice cube in a warm and a cold place and write what happens (chapter 4).
- Use a torch and a toy to make shadows, and a rubber band to make sounds (chapter 5).
- Look for simple machines at home: a door handle, a seesaw, scissors (chapter 7).
