What is this book?

A science workbook is where a student tries things out in writing: labelling diagrams, filling tables, answering questions and planning small investigations. This one is made for the same Grade 7 course as the Student's Book, so each chapter of the course has a matching practice section.

The chapters we can see on the contents page start with the human body: joints and muscles, blood, and the respiratory system. They go on to food and health (a healthy diet, a healthy lifestyle, immunity and diseases) and finish the biology strand with ecosystems. The chemistry strand has four chapters on atoms, mixtures, the reactivity of metals and heat in reactions. The physics strand has seven chapters from heat and temperature to technology in everyday life, with the long chapters on light and magnetism. Earth and space closes the year with the Earth's resources, climate and the galaxy.

How to use the workbook through the year

Term 1 – biology. Work through chapters 1 to 8 beside the lessons. The body-system chapters are drawing and labelling chapters, so keep a sharp pencil and a ruler.

Term 2 – chemistry and the start of physics. Chapters 9 to 14 are short and numerical in places (speed in chapter 14), so practise sums in the margin and check units.

Term 3 – physics and earth science. Chapters 15 to 22 have the longest chapters (light, 19 pages, and magnetism, 17 pages) and the climate and galaxy chapters, which are good for revision before the final exam.

Tips for a student

• Do the workbook page the same day as the lesson, while the idea is fresh.
• Write answers in full sentences and use the science words from the glossary on page 268.
• Mark your own page with a different colour pen, then correct the mistakes.
• Keep the Student's Book open for diagrams, and use the workbook for practice.

• Cut and label a paper model of a joint or a lung to go with chapters 1 and 3.
• Do one small investigation at home, such as testing which materials stretch (with an adult).
• Use the workbook before each test to find the chapters that need more practice.
• Keep the finished workbook: it is a ready-made revision file for Class 8.
