What the Class 5 notebook list asks for

For Class 5 the Army Public School list has eight notebooks: two single-lined (large), one small-square (large), one single-lined interleaf (large), three broad-lined (large) and one drawing notebook.

Class 5 is the first year when the ordinary single-lined notebook replaces the four-lined one. This is a quiet but important change: a ten-year-old is now expected to keep handwriting neat without the guide lines, in preparation for the middle school years.

Class 5 is the last year of primary and the first with ordinary single-lined notebooks. It is a good moment to practise writing without guide lines. Across the whole school list that we photographed (Early Years Stage 2, Pre I and Class I to Class X) the number of notebooks rises from 3 to about 10 or 11.

Class 5 students write essays, comprehension answers and maths solutions in full. The three broad-lined notebooks are the largest group in the set, and the interleaf notebook gives space for diagrams and extra notes. A student who handles these notebooks well enters middle school with a real advantage.

• Practise writing a full page on single lines without the line guides before school starts.
• Keep one broad-lined notebook for rough work so the others stay clean.
• Colour-code the covers with stickers: one colour per subject.
