Class 3 is the last stop before large notebooks arrive. The seven small notebooks are used for neater, longer and more varied writing. Across the whole school list that we photographed (Early Years Stage 2, Pre I and Class I to Class X) the number of notebooks rises from 3 to about 10 or 11.

Children in Class 3 begin to write about what they read, to solve word problems and to keep a daily routine of homework. The medium-square notebook is where sums and shapes are drawn carefully. This is also the right age to teach a child to cover and label notebooks without help.
