What is this book?

Class 5 science covers life science, environmental science, chemistry and physics. The book starts with how living things are classified, goes on to microorganisms, flowers and seeds and pollution, then to matter and its changes, light and sound, electricity and magnetism, the structure of the Earth, space and satellites, and technology.

It is the last primary science book, and the habit it builds (observe, ask, test, explain) is what a Class 6 student needs.

The ten units in three groups

Life and environment (units 1 to 4): classification, microorganisms, flowers and seeds, and pollution.
Matter and energy (units 5 to 7): physical and chemical changes, light and sound, electricity and magnetism.
Earth, space and technology (units 8 to 10): the structure of the Earth, space and satellites, and technology in daily life.

Experiments at home

Sort animals and plants into groups and draw a simple classification chart.
Look at the parts of a real flower and name them.
Soak a bean seed and watch it germinate.
Melt ice, boil water and talk about reversible changes; watch iron rust and talk about irreversible ones.
Use a torch to make shadows with different materials.
Make a simple circuit with a battery, a bulb and wires, with an adult beside you.

Revision tips

Use the glossary at page 169 to learn new words, and draw a labelled diagram for each unit. Explain each unit aloud as if teaching a younger cousin. If your child can do that, the unit is understood.
