Quick facts

What is this book?

Each worksheet is one topic, one or two pages long, so a lesson from the textbook can be practised the same evening. Worksheets are numbered 1 to 49, which makes it easy for a teacher to set homework and for a parent to find the page.

The units match the textbook: whole numbers, HCF and LCM, fractions, decimals and percentages, distance and time, the unitary method, geometry, perimeter and area, and data handling.

Where the worksheets are heaviest

Unit 4 (decimals and percentages) has 14 worksheets, the most of any unit, and Geometry has 9. That is where Class 5 students need the most repetition: four worksheets are on percentages alone, and three are on triangles.

Using the workbook

Do the matching textbook lesson first, then the worksheet. Let your child try each question alone, then check it with the answer key in the textbook. Mark mistakes lightly, go back to the textbook example, and try again the next day.

Daily routine

Two worksheets a week is a comfortable pace for most students. Keep a notebook for rough work, and ask your child to explain one answer aloud each time: "How did you work that out?"

Keep a simple score sheet

With 49 worksheets over nine units, a small score sheet helps. Write the worksheet number, the date and the marks in a notebook. After every unit, choose the two worksheets with the lowest marks and redo them a week later without looking at the first attempt. Many children see a clear jump in marks the second time, and that proves to them that practice works.
