What is this book?

Class 5 maths is the bridge to secondary school. Numbers rise to one million, HCF and LCM are taught, fractions are multiplied and divided, decimals and percentages are introduced together, and there are units on distance and time, the unitary method, geometry (angles, triangles, quadrilaterals, symmetry and 3D objects), perimeter and area, and averages and bar graphs.

The Geometry unit is the longest, with 40 pages, because shapes and angles need a lot of drawing and practice.

The year in four blocks

Number work (units 1 to 3) cover numbers to one million, order of operations, HCF and LCM, and the four operations on fractions.
Decimals, percentages and measures (units 4 and 5) cover decimals and percentages, distance, time and the calendar.
Problem solving (unit 6) is the unitary method: find the value of one, then many.
Shape and data (units 7 to 9) cover geometry, perimeter and area, and averages and bar graphs.

Tips for a Class 5 maths year

Practise tables and number facts daily so that long division and fractions feel easier. Draw diagrams for word problems. Check each answer with the answer key at the back, and correct mistakes the same day. Use the Summary at the end of each unit as a revision sheet.

Textbook and workbook
