What is this book?
Class 3 maths is where numbers reach 10,000, multiplication and division become fluent, fractions appear for the first time as a full topic, and measuring covers length, mass, capacity and time. This book teaches all of that in an order that builds step by step.
A special feature is the "Introduction to the Book" page, which explains what each part of a unit is for. It lists Student Learning Outcomes at the start of each unit, a Colour Theme for each unit, Build Up exercises that introduce new ideas from simple to complex, Brush Up exercises to practise them, and Facts to Remember boxes to recall key words. It also has a Summary at the end of each unit, an Appendix, a Glossary, Assessment papers and an Answer Key.
The second page of the introduction adds a Mathetric box with "Tips and Tricks" that support a child while applying a concept, a Summary of key points for a quick review, an Appendix of basic definitions, notations and relations, a Glossary that explains maths terms in simple, short form, Assessment papers based on the assessment criteria of the Single National Curriculum 2020, and an Answer Key at the end of the book so that students can check their own work.

The year in four blocks
- Numbers (units 1 and 2) cover Roman numbers, odd and even numbers, place value to 10,000, ordering, estimation, and the four operations.
- Fractions (unit 3) go from common fractions to proper and improper fractions, equivalent fractions, comparing, adding and subtracting like fractions.
- Measures (units 4 and 5) cover length, mass and capacity, and then time, with the calendar and units of time.

How the features help a child
The learning outcomes tell a child what they will be able to do at the end of the unit. The Build Up exercises introduce one idea at a time, the Brush Up exercises give practice, and the Facts to Remember box fixes the key words. Parents can use the outcomes as a checklist: before a test, ask your child to show they can do each one.
Workbook and textbook
The Smart School also uses a Smart Mathematics Workbook for Class 3 with extra practice. The textbook is where each idea is taught, so keep it for lessons and use the workbook for homework.
