What is this book?
At eight years old, children are curious about everything. This book channels that into 16 short chapters: living things and their habitats, the Sun, matter, energy, resources and how to protect them, food, the founders of Pakistan, inventions, forces and machines, the role of government and citizens, solving disagreements and staying safe.
It is a mix of science, social studies and character education, so a child learns facts and also how to behave.

The 16 chapters in groups
- Living things and the Earth (chapters 1 to 3): habitats, changes in living things and the Sun.
- Matter and energy (chapters 4 and 5): what matter is and where energy comes from.
- Resources and food (chapters 6 to 8): types of resources, how to conserve them and the food we eat.
- Great leaders (chapters 9 and 10): Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and Allama Muhammad Iqbal.
- A changing world (chapters 11 to 13): how the world changes, inventions, and forces and machines.
- Citizens and safety (chapters 14 to 16): the role of the government and citizens, working out a disagreement, and safety.
Why two chapters on Quaid-e-Azam and Allama Iqbal
Class 3 is when children first learn the story of the founders of Pakistan in some detail. Telling the story as a short bedtime talk, with a picture, helps a child remember the main facts: who they were, what they believed and what they did for the country.
Safety is a chapter, not an afterthought
The last chapter, Safety, is one parents should read together with the child: fire, electricity, roads, strangers and first steps in an emergency. Practise a family plan so the child knows what to do.
A weekly plan for the 16 chapters
With 16 chapters over 110 pages, the book averages about seven pages a chapter, so a steady plan helps. Read the chapter title aloud on the first day and look at every picture on the second. Read the text together on the third day. On the fourth day ask your child to tell you three things they learned, and on the fifth day ask for one drawing from the chapter with labels. Longer chapters such as Force and Machines (pages 86 to 98) deserve two weeks. Before a test, go back to the contents list above and tick the chapters your child can explain without looking at the book.
