What is this book?
After Nursery and Prep, the child in Class 1 has to start reading and writing real sentences. The book follows two child characters, Nasir and Nadia, who go through the year with the class: they meet each other, help others, go to the market, grow vegetables, visit the doctor and take a trip to the railway station.
Every unit has a theme (for example ethics and values, nature, environment, travel and transport, education and employment) and a text type (narrative stories, poems, expository texts and interpersonal communication). The contents page also names the reading, grammar, writing and speaking skills of each unit, so it works as a skills map.
Typical skills grow step by step. Unit 1 revises the alphabet with capital and small letters and tracing. Unit 3 introduces naming words and vowels and consonants. Unit 4 teaches verbs and the present continuous. Unit 5 teaches singular and plural. Unit 6 describes things with adjectives. Units 7 to 11 add pronouns, punctuation, nouns, question words and articles.

The units in four steps
Units 1 to 3 (pages 2–26). Alphabet, early reading and meeting the characters. The skills include capital and small letters, picture and word association, CVC words, rhyming and naming words. Review Test 1 closes this part.
Units 4 to 6 (pages 27–54). Action words, the present continuous tense ("is sleeping, sitting, standing, running, jumping"), singular and plural, describing words and, in speaking, giving an opinion and describing an advertisement. Review Test 2 follows.
Units 7 to 9 (pages 55–76). The child learns pronouns (he, she), possessive words (my, your, his, her), punctuation marks and capital letters, and writes a description of a room, a book cover and a card. In speaking, children name things, describe pictures and have a conversation using greetings.
Units 10 and 11 and revision (pages 77–89). Question words, nouns, writing about a picture, a story with a beginning and an ending, and riddles. The last section has word lists, "choose the best answer" and "fill in the blanks".
