What is this book?
The name First Steps says it all: the book teaches a Class 1 child how to read by sounding out words (phonics), how to use simple grammar and how to read aloud with fluency. Every unit begins with a reading text, then trains word reading and spelling, vocabulary, grammar, punctuation, listening and speaking and composition (short writing).
The texts are of many kinds, which is good for young readers: a fantasy story (Mama Duck's Egg), a non-fiction explanatory text (Wings and Feet), a traditional story (Our Home), a song (The Wheels of the Bus), modern rhymes, a fable (The Fox and the Tiger), poems (Who Has Seen the Wind?, Two bears) and instructions for toys.
The phonics plan is clear on the contents page. Unit 1 begins with short vowel sounds, unit 2 adds digraphs such as th, ng, ck and sh, unit 4 adds ch, nk and ou, later units add split digraphs (a_e, e_e, u_e, o_e), long vowels (ee, ea, ie, igh, oa) and sounds like ew, ue, oo, ar, or, ir and ur. This makes the book a full phonics course.

The skills in each unit
Every unit trains the same strands, which helps a child to know what to expect:
- Grammar: simple present, present continuous, adjectives, prepositions, plurals (regular and irregular), pronouns (he, she, they), possessive adjectives, past tense with -ed, short questions and answers, imperatives (do and don't) and question words (who, what, when, which).
- Punctuation: capital letters at the beginning of sentences and for names, full stops, question marks, exclamation marks and capital letters for days of the week.
- Listening and speaking: answering questions, describing pictures, giving clues, interviews with who, what, where, why and when, recounting events and following directions.
- Composition: describing a picture, writing about brothers and sisters, riddles, stories with starters (one day, first, then), reports, labels and diagrams, instructions and retelling a story.
The book in three steps
Units 1 to 5 (pages 2–53). Simple sounds, blending, digraphs and the first sentences. Speaking tasks are about familiar things: family, animals, vehicles and rhymes.
Units 6 to 9 (pages 54–84). Silent-e digraphs, long vowels, past tense, days of the week and sense words. Children now write a report on a school trip and a fable.
Units 10 to 12 and listening (pages 85–115+). Compound words, comparatives and more complex plural rules. Children write instructions and retell a story.
Why this book?

- Texts include stories, non-fiction, poems, songs and instructions, so children meet many kinds of reading.
- The four strands (reading and spelling, grammar, speaking, composition) are in every unit.
