Quick facts

What is this book?

The series is built around a picnic theme that eases a young learner into each new topic before the exercises become more structured. Class 2 is the year of three-digit numbers, regrouping, the first multiplication tables and division, and measuring in metres, centimetres, kilograms, grams and litres. This book teaches each step in a clear order and gives a whole chapter to each of the big ideas.

This book is the New Syllabus, Second Edition. It is a different book from the Updated Edition of Oxford Primary Mathematics Course Book 2 used at Army Public Schools, which has a beach-ball cover and 11 chapters. Check the cover and the edition before you order.

The year in six steps

  1. Numbers to 1000 (chapter 1) teach counting in hundreds, tens and ones, place value, comparing and ordering, patterns and odd and even numbers.
  2. Adding and subtracting within 1000 (chapter 2) go first without regrouping and then with it, followed by word problems.
  3. Multiplication and division (chapters 3 to 6) build the tables of 2, 5 and 10, then 3 and 4, and the matching division chapters.
  4. Measures (chapters 7, 8 and 15) cover length, mass and volume with real units.
  5. Money, time and shapes (chapters 10 to 12, 14 and 17) include dollars, cents and rupees, two- and three-dimensional shapes, telling the time to five minutes and rotation.
  6. Fractions and data (chapters 13 and 16) bring understanding fractions, adding and subtracting like fractions, picture graphs and tally charts.

Why word problems get their own lessons

Word problems appear at the end of most chapters, and chapter 9 is entirely about "2-part" and "2-step" problems. They are where children learn to choose the right operation. A good habit is to read the problem aloud, tell it in your own words, draw a picture and only then write the number sentence.
