What is this book?
Class 6 is the first year of secondary geography, and Book 1 begins with the planet itself: what geography is, how the Earth formed, why it is restless (tectonic plates) and how rocks form. It then looks at landforms, the climatic regions of the world, forests, natural disasters and the ways water, ice and people change the Earth. Throughout, examples from Pakistan are placed beside the world picture: the climate of Pakistan, Pakistan's forests and natural disasters in Pakistan.
Each chapter ends with a Test yourself page, which makes revision easy: finish the chapter, then try the test without help.

How the six chapters fit together
- The structure of the Earth and types of rocks explains what geography is, how the Earth was formed, tectonic plates, how rocks form, how geology influences a national economy, and how to find places on maps, globes and atlases.
- Mountains, plateaus and valleys describe the landscape and compare how people live in different habitats.
- Climatic regions of the world introduce the climate zones, cold regions, tropical and temperate climates and the climate of Pakistan.
- Forests of the world cover habitats and ecosystems, rainforests, forests in Pakistan and problems with possible solutions.
- Natural disasters treat earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanoes, with a lesson on natural disasters in Pakistan.
- The changing Earth and human activities show weathering and erosion, the force of moving and frozen water, and how land use changes.
Using maps, globes and atlases
Lesson 1.7 teaches how to find locations on maps, globes and atlases, and that skill is used in every other chapter. Keep an atlas open when your child reads: find the Himalayas, the Karakoram, the Indus plains, the Arabian Sea, and the hot and cold zones. A map outline of Pakistan, labelled from memory, is the best revision.
