What is this book?
Class 3 is a big step in maths: numbers grow to six digits, multiplication reaches 1000 and its multiples, division is introduced as a full topic, and fractions become a real chapter with equivalent, proper, improper and unlike fractions. New Countdown 3 treats these as seven large chapters instead of many small ones, so the book is a thick, 235-page course.
The first chapter is about whole numbers: even and odd numbers, Roman numerals, 4- and 5-digit numbers, then 6-digit numbers with number names, place value, expanded form, comparing and ordering, plus estimation. The second chapter, number operations, covers addition and subtraction of 4-digit numbers, multiplication (by 10, 100 and 1000 and their multiples) and division.
The third chapter, fractions, is the longest topic list: halves and quarters, fractions of sets, equivalent, proper and improper, like and unlike, comparing, ordering, adding, subtracting and dividing fractions. The rest of the book covers measurement (length, mass, capacity with conversions), time, geometry and data handling.

The chapters in four groups
Numbers and operations (chapters 1 and 2, from page 2). Chapter 1 runs for 31 pages (2 to 32) and chapter 2 begins on page 33. Together they form the heart of the Class 3 syllabus: place value to six digits and the four operations with bigger numbers.
Fractions and measurement (chapters 3 and 4). The page numbers are not visible in our photograph, but the topic lists show that these two chapters sit between page 33 and page 160. Fractions are the biggest topic list in the book.
Time and geometry (chapters 5 and 6, pages 160–209). Time includes reading "past the hour" and "to the hour", changing units of time and the solar and lunar calendars. Geometry (page 181) has lines, parallel lines, quadrilaterals, circles, symmetry, solid objects and perimeter.
Data and practice (chapter 7 onwards, pages 210–235+). Data handling is a short chapter on Carroll diagrams, tally charts, pictographs and column graphs. Then come worksheets, maths lab and the answers, so a parent can check homework.
Why this book?
- It has the answers at the back (page 235), so a parent can check homework.
- The fractions chapter has a complete topic list from halves to division of fractions.
- Maths lab activities make abstract topics such as symmetry and perimeter practical.
- It continues the same series as Countdown 1, 2 and 7, so the style stays familiar.
Who is it for, and when is it used?
Who: Class 3 (Grade 3) children in schools that use Oxford New Countdown. When: through the school year. Chapters 1 and 2 are usually the first term, fractions and measurement the middle of the year, and time, geometry and data the final term. Page numbers: number operations start on page 33, time on 160, geometry on 181, data handling on 210 and answers on 235.
How to help at home
- Write a six-digit number on a card and ask your child to read it aloud and write it in words.
- Use a ruler to measure items in centimetres and millimetres, and add the lengths.
- Cut a chapati into equal parts to show equivalent fractions: 1/2 = 2/4.
- Draw a clock face and practise "ten past" and "quarter to".
- Make a tally chart of the colours of the cars passing your house.
