Topics students will find in each part

Numbers. The book starts with sets — what a set is, Venn diagrams, sets of numbers, subsets and super sets, types of sets and operations on sets — and moves on to rational numbers (the number line, standard form, comparing, ordering, reciprocal, rounding off, operations and absolute value), decimal numbers (conversions between fractions, percentages and decimals, terminating and non-terminating decimals, approximation) and squares and square roots (perfect squares, properties, and finding square roots by prime factorisation).

Arithmetic. Rate and average rate, proportions, direct and inverse variation, and then financial arithmetic: profit and loss, discount, taxes (income tax, property tax, general sales tax, value-added tax), commission, zakat and ushr.

Algebra. Number sequences, algebra as generalisation, inequalities, exponents, algebraic polynomials and their operations, the identities for the square of a sum, the square of a difference and the product of a sum and a difference, factorisation (common factors, breaking the middle term, making groups) and linear equations — including the coordinate plane, graphs of linear equations, gradient and y-intercept, and simultaneous linear equations and inequalities.

Geometry and mensuration. Triangles and polygons, practical constructions (bisecting a line segment and an angle, constructing triangles and quadrilaterals), symmetry and translation, circles (elements, constructing a semicircle, concentric and eccentric circles, properties), perimeter and area, units conversion, time-distance-speed, shaded regions, volume and surface area of prisms and the right circular cylinder.

Data handling. Data presentation, bar graphs, line graphs, pie charts, measures of central tendency and probability.
