Quick facts

What is this book?

Class 2 is the year of multiplication and division. A child who could add and subtract in Class 1 now learns times tables, sharing and the first idea of fractions. New Countdown 2 gives each of these topics its own chapter, so none is rushed.

The book starts with whole numbers (two- and three-digit numbers, comparing and ordering, place value and number names), moves to addition and subtraction with converting (carrying and borrowing), and then meets multiplication (times tables, multiplication by zero, converting ones and tens, the commutative property) and division (number line, times tables). Fractions follow with halves, quarters and one-third.

The second half covers measurement in metres, centimetres, kilometres, kilograms, grams, litres and millilitres, time (clocks, a.m. and p.m., calendars) and geometry (cubes, cuboids, spheres, cones, straight and curved lines).

The chapters in four groups

Numbers (chapter 1, pages 2–27). Two- and three-digit numbers with place value and number names. The chapter ends with a review, which is a good test before the operations start.

Add and subtract (chapters 2 and 3, pages 28–55). The word "converting" appears again and again: converting ones, tens and hundreds is the book's way of saying carrying and borrowing. A child who understands it will make fewer mistakes in Class 3.

Multiply, divide and share (chapters 4 to 6, pages 56–104). Chapter 4 is the first of the big chapters with 28 pages, because times tables need practice. Division (11 pages) uses the number line and the tables the child just learned. Fractions open with halves, quarters and one-third.

Real life and shapes (chapters 7 to 9, pages 105–162). The longest section is measurement, which has length, mass and capacity with conversions. Time and geometry follow. The book then adds worksheets, an end-of-year review and maths lab activities.
