What is this book?
Class 1 is where a child meets numbers properly for the first time. New Countdown 1 begins gently with a Getting Ready section (counting and colouring, shapes, simple addition and subtraction, making 10 and comparison) before the main chapters start. That first section is useful because children arrive from Nursery and Prep with different levels.
The book then follows the order most Class 1 teachers like: numbers first (up to 100, in tens and backwards, with ordering and ordinal numbers), then the two operations (adding and subtracting two-digit numbers), then real life (length, mass and capacity, Pakistani money, clocks and calendars) and finally shapes, patterns and position. The ending has worksheets for practice and maths lab activities for hands-on learning.
The words "Enhanced Blended Edition" on the cover mean the printed book is meant to be used together with digital resources. Ask your school what it uses; the printed book works on its own for homework and revision.

The chapters in four groups
Getting ready (page 1). Sixteen pages of warm-up. A child counts and colours, names shapes, adds, subtracts, makes 10 and compares. It is a quick test of what the child already knows.
Numbers (chapter 1, pages 17–56). The longest chapter in the first half of the book, with about 40 pages. It covers counting to 20, grouping in tens, reading numbers to 100, counting backwards, comparing, ordering and ordinal numbers (first, second, third). If a child is weak here, everything after it feels hard, so spend the time.
Addition and subtraction (chapters 2 and 3, pages 57–88). Both chapters concentrate on two-digit numbers. The contents page lists one main topic for each, which means the lessons build the skill slowly with many examples.
The world around us (chapters 4 to 7, pages 89–127). Measuring length, mass and capacity, using rupees in shop games, reading clocks and calendars (including the lunar calendar) and learning position words such as over, under, far, near, right and left. Then the book adds 38 pages of worksheets and a maths lab.
Why this book?
- It starts with a Getting Ready section, so children with different backgrounds begin on equal ground.
- It uses Pakistani money and the lunar calendar as well as the solar calendar, which are part of a child's daily life.
- Worksheets and maths lab activities are included, so there is practice on every topic without a second book.
- It is part of the same Countdown series that continues to Class 7, so a child can keep one style for years.
Who is it for, and when is it used?
Who: Class 1 (Grade 1) children in schools that use Oxford New Countdown, and parents who help with homework. When: through the school year. Chapter 1 and the Getting Ready section are usually the first term; chapters 2 to 4 follow; money, time and geometry come in the second half. Page numbers: chapter 1 starts on page 17, addition on 57, subtraction on 72, measurement on 89, money on 104, time on 112 and geometry on 118.
How to help at home
- Count steps, spoons or shoes every day and ask "how many more to make ten?".
- Play shop with real coins and notes for the money chapter.
- Show the clock at meal times and ask the child to say the hour.
- Look for shapes at home: a roti is a circle, a box is a cuboid.
- Ask the child to teach you "over and under" and "far and near" with toys.
