What is this book?
Starter is the gentlest book of the New Oxford Primary Science series, written for children who are just beginning science. It has only 38 pages of units and uses the same six "parts" as the higher books (Ourselves, Living Things, Materials and Matter, Forces, Energy and Machines, The Earth and the Atmosphere, The Sky and Space), so a child who starts here knows the shape of the series.
Each unit is very short (usually 2 to 6 pages). The learning outcomes show how simple the goals are: identify, name, locate and count some body parts, name animals and explore their basic features, identify that some things are living and some are non-living, match objects with the materials they are made of, observe that we can hear many different sounds, name and identify a range of colours, recognise that the Earth is big and round, learn that air is necessary for life, name different kinds of weather and tell things we can see and hear at night.
The book ends with Activity Pages (page 39) and Teacher's notes (page 50). There is no glossary, because a Starter learner needs pictures more than words.

What a child should be able to do (student learning outcomes)
- Ourselves (units 1 and 2): identify, name, locate and count body parts (ear, foot, finger, neck, nose, arm, lips, chin, eye, leg, teeth, toe); name the body parts used to see, hear, feel, smell and taste; understand that people look different but have similar parts; take care of personal hygiene; name items used to clean the body; identify healthy foods; tell clean from dirty and healthy from unwell.
- Living things (units 3 to 5): name animals and their basic features; compare their size; know that all animals have young ones and how they care for them; name parts of plants and compare them; say what makes something living (feeding, growing, moving).
- Materials (unit 6): match objects with the materials they are made of; tell hard from soft; know that things can be hot or cold.
- Forces and energy (units 7 to 9): tell the movement of living and non-living things; notice different sounds and music; know that the Sun gives heat and light and that we need light to see; name colours.
- Earth and atmosphere (units 10 to 13): know the Earth is big, round and made of land and water; mountains, deserts and rivers; air is all around us and wind is moving air; water is necessary for life and sea water is salty; different kinds of weather and a weather chart with symbols.
- Sky and space (unit 14): identify objects in the sky; tell natural from man-made things in the sky; day and night; things we can see and hear at night.
Why this book?
- It uses the same six-part structure as the full series, so the child grows with one design.
- The learning outcomes are simple and visible: name, match, compare and observe.
- Activity Pages and teacher's notes support teaching in a small class.
- It follows the idea that young children learn science by looking and doing.
Who is it for, and when is it used?
Who: the youngest primary learners in schools that use New Oxford Primary Science, and their parents. When: through the school year, one short unit every one or two weeks. Page numbers: materials start on page 19, sounds on page 24, the weather on page 33 and the sky on page 35.
