What is this book?
Kindergarten is when a child starts to read words and short sentences. This book follows a clear plan. Each unit has a theme (family, animals, the garden, the sea, colours, days, the Earth, jobs, farm animals, the shop, months, time, toys and instructions), a Story Time story or poem, a phonics focus (new words with the vowels a, e, i, o, u, then sounds such as ai, ee, ay, ow, oo, or, ng, x, sh, ch, th, ar, er, ir, ck, rk, ou, oy and oi) and a writing practice page.
The contents page is a learning-outcomes map. For each unit it says what a child should be able to do: talk about themselves and their family, retell a story, learn words that follow a pattern (for example 'ad', 'ed' and 'et'), count 1 to 10, name animals and their homes, read the time on a clock and listen to and follow instructions.
The book is full of familiar characters and rhymes: Bhalu, the Bear, Dolly the Dolphin, Snowy the Lamb, TQ, the Robot, Old MacDonald, Mary had a little lamb, Hickory Dickory Dock and Itsy-bitsy spider.
