What is this book?
Book 4 is the one-year mathematics course for nine- and ten-year-olds. The cover shows a board game, which is a good hint: the book wants children to think, try, check and try again. Every chapter has a list of small lessons, and the lessons are ordered from easy to harder: "without regrouping" before "with regrouping", "without remainder" before "with remainder", one-digit divisors before two-digit divisors.
The long chapters are the ones that matter most: Multiplication and Division (pages 40–71), Fractions (72–104) and Decimals (105–141) together fill more than half the book.

How the chapters are paired
Numbers first (chapters 1 and 2). Five-digit numbers, place value, rounding and estimation. A child who can round to the nearest ten thousand will find word problems in later chapters far easier.
The big middle (chapters 3 to 5). Multiplication and division give way to fractions, and fractions give way to decimals. The book deliberately connects them: improper fractions to mixed numbers, fractions to decimals and decimals to percentage.
Patterns and shapes (chapters 6 and 7). Number patterns, then lines, circles, angles and symmetry. Children use a protractor for the first time in this book.
Measuring and graphing (chapters 8 and 9). Length, mass, capacity, temperature, time, perimeter, area, and the bar graph in four versions, ending with probability.
Why this book?
- Every operation appears first in its simplest form and then in a harder form, so a weaker child can climb step by step.
- The book connects topics: fractions lead to decimals and decimals lead to percentage, which is how the next class continues.
- The contents are detailed, so a parent can see which skill a school test will cover.
Who is it for, and when is it used?
Who: Class 4 children (Grade 4) at Allied School and other schools that use AEP | Arvo Education Press books. When: the whole school year. A common plan is chapters 1 to 3 in the first term, 4 and 5 in the second and 6 to 9 in the last. Why the page ranges matter: they show the weight of each chapter. Fractions has 33 pages and decimals 37, so these two chapters need the most practice time.
How to help at home
- Play a number-card game: build the biggest and the smallest five-digit number with five cards.
- Practise multiplication tables daily before chapter 3 starts.
- Use a pizza or paratha cut into pieces to show improper fractions and mixed numbers.
- Let your child read a thermometer and a kitchen clock; chapter 8 uses both.
- Draw a bar graph of the family's favourite fruits to prepare for chapter 9.
