What is this book?
An "English Language Ladder" climbs one step at a time. Each unit builds a bundle of language skills around one reading text: a topic from the child's life (a poem about television, a story about fire safety), then the grammar and vocabulary the text uses, then speaking, then writing. By the end of the book the child has read poems, stories and informative texts and has written narratives, descriptions, an opinion piece, an informative text and an informal letter.
The contents page is unusual because it is a skills map. For every unit it names the theme and sub-theme and the exact skills in Reading and Critical Thinking, Vocabulary and Grammar, Oral Communication and Writing.

How the ten units fit together
Units 1 to 5 – the first review. The book opens with the life of the Prophet (peace be upon him), a poem about television, a text on clean water and climate, a story about an emperor's antelope and a moon story. They teach nouns, pronouns, adjectives and three tenses, and they end with a review on page 74.
Units 6 to 10 – the second review. Personal safety, patriotism, nature, fire safety and life skills lead into sentence kinds, direct speech, modal verbs and the future. The writing moves from stories to opinion pieces, informative texts and an informal letter. The second review is on page 150 and the glossary on page 156.
Why the themes matter. Almost every unit also teaches something outside English: drinking-water safety, stranger danger, fire drills, organising your things. Parents can talk about the theme at home and the child then has real words to use in the writing task.
Why this book?
- The skills map on pages vi and vii makes it easy for a parent or teacher to see which grammar point goes with which text.
- It matches the Single National Curriculum 2020 wording on the cover.
- It develops all four language skills in every unit: reading, grammar and vocabulary, speaking and listening, and writing.
Who is it for, and when is it used?
Who: Class 4 pupils (Grade 4) at Allied School and other schools using AEP | Arvo Education Press books, and parents who want to follow the English lessons. When: through the school year. Many classes finish Unit 5 and its review before the mid-year tests and Units 6 to 10 before the final examination. How to use the page numbers: the units begin on pages 1, 18, 32, 49, 61, 80, 96, 111, 124 and 136, so unit 3 ("Water is Life") is the shortest of the early units and unit 10 is the last before the review.
How to help at home
- Ask your child to read the unit text aloud and underline words she or he does not know; check them against the glossary on page 156.
- Play a rhyming game before Unit 2 and the poem lesson.
- After each grammar lesson, ask for three new sentences with the tense or word type.
- For the writing task, let your child plan on paper first, then write, then edit with a pencil (drafting and editing are in Unit 3).
- Keep a small notebook of spelling patterns, silent letters and homophones.
