What is this book?
Book 5 is a complete one-year maths course for ten- and eleven-year-olds. It is organised by chapter, and each chapter lists every skill it teaches, so a parent can see at a glance what the next two weeks of homework will be. The sequence is easy to follow: whole numbers and the four operations first, then factors, fractions, decimals and percentage, then algebra patterns, measurement, geometry and finally data handling.
A feature of the contents is the number of real-world word problems. Almost every operation (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, percentage, the unitary method, measurement) ends with a word-problem lesson, which is how Class 5 maths now tests understanding.

The book in four stages
Stage 1 – Numbers (chapters 1 to 4). Seven-digit numbers, the four operations on big numbers, divisibility rules for 7 and 11, primes, H.C.F. and L.C.M. These are the tools every later chapter needs.
Stage 2 – Parts of a whole (chapters 5 to 8). Fractions, decimals, percentage and the unitary method are the longest block, 78 to 152, about a third of the book. A child who understands that ½, 0.5 and 50% are the same quantity has the core idea of Class 5.
Stage 3 – Patterns and measures (chapters 9 to 13). Square and cube numbers, units of length, mass, capacity and time, area, prisms and angles. Chapter 10 is the biggest in this stage with 27 pages.
Stage 4 – Shape and data (chapters 14 to 16). Symmetry, bar, line and pie charts and the average; these are the chapters children usually enjoy because they can draw.
Why this book?
- It matches the Single National Curriculum 2020 wording on the cover and uses the same chapter names for every topic.
- It builds skills slowly: regrouping, estimation and word problems each have their own lesson.
- The contents lists every lesson, which makes the book easy to use for homework planning and test revision.
Who is it for, and when is it used?
Who: Class 5 pupils at Allied School and other schools that use AEP | Arvo Education Press books, and parents who help with homework. When: through the whole school year. A sensible plan is chapters 1 to 4 in the first term, 5 to 10 in the middle of the year and 11 to 16 at the end. How to use the page ranges: if the class has reached "Fractions", the homework will be in pages 78 to 101; the range at the end of each chapter title shows exactly how long the chapter is.
How to help at home
- Practise place value with seven-digit numbers: read them aloud, write them in words and expand them.
- Make times tables a daily five-minute habit before chapter 3.
- For fractions, cut a roti or a chocolate bar: it makes mixed numbers visible.
- For measurement, let the child measure the room in centimetres and metres and the water bottle in millilitres.
- Check word problems by asking "does my answer make sense?" before looking at the key.
