What is this book?
It is the student book for the first year of computing in the Cambridge Primary programme. Computing for a Class 1 child does not mean sitting at a screen all day. The cover shows what it means instead: children working on a floor mat, giving directions to small robots and learning that a computer follows exact steps. The book teaches this idea through games, pictures and short tasks, and many activities can be done without a computer.
A note for teachers on the contents page explains how the book works with digital resources. A symbol in the book shows where extra digital-only content is needed. This is reached through the Digital Learner's Book on Cambridge GO, either from the Media tab or directly from the page. The source files can be downloaded from the Source files tab on Cambridge GO, and that tab also has a teacher guidance document that supports the digital activities and programming tasks. Please ask your school how it uses these resources.

What children learn, unit by unit
- Computational thinking and programming (page 9). The longest unit starts with algorithms, the idea of a set of steps, which are all around us in everyday life. Children then meet Bee-Bot, a floor robot that moves when you give it commands, predict what happens next and learn to spot and fix a bug in a set of instructions.
- Managing data (page 60). Using data and collecting data. At this age it is about sorting and counting things, such as the colours of cars or favourite foods, and showing the results.
- Networks and digital communication (page 91). Getting connected and an introduction to the internet. Children learn simple ideas about how devices connect and share information.
- Computer systems (page 113). Types of technology, ins and outs (the things that put information into a computer, and the things that give it out) and "Bots everywhere!", which looks at robots in the world around us.
Who should buy this book?
- Parents of Class 1 children whose schools use Cambridge Primary Computing and name Learner's Book 1.
- Teachers who plan computing lessons and want a structured book for beginners.
- Tutors who introduce young children to computational thinking.
Why this book?
It teaches thinking skills, not only button pressing. The idea of an algorithm and of debugging helps with maths, reading and problem solving. The Bee-Bot lessons are especially memorable because children can move a real robot. Because the book is built for beginners, it uses plenty of pictures and very short tasks.
When is it used?
Schools usually teach the four units in order across the year, starting with unit 1 and finishing with the robots in unit 4. The first unit is the longest, with four lessons that cover about 50 pages.
How to help your child with it
- Play "robot and programmer" at home: one person gives step-by-step directions and the other follows them exactly.
- Ask your child to explain steps for a simple job, such as washing hands, and find the "bug" if a step is missing.
- Count and sort toys or fruit together and make a simple picture chart.
- Talk about the devices you use at home, and which are "ins" (keyboard, camera) and which are "outs" (screen, speaker).
