What is this book?

For a six-year-old, "social studies" starts at the front door. The book begins with me and my family and my school, grows to my values, playtime and my country, and then reaches out to transportation, the body and senses, healthy habits, living and non-living things, plants and animals, our earth and seasons and weather. The units mix civics, values and basic science, which is how many Class 1 books are planned.

The cover has the same idea: two little explorers with a magnifying glass and binoculars next to a globe. The book wants children to look closely at the world around them.

The units in groups

Units 1 to 3 – me, my school, my values (pages 1–36). Family, school, values and playtime make up the first third of the book. It is where a child learns who is in the family, what a school is for, and how to play fairly.

Units 4 and 5 – my country and how we move (pages 37–52). "My Country" is a short chapter of five pages, and "Means of Transportation" is the only chapter in the Goods and Services unit.

Unit 6 – life sciences (pages 53–98). The longest unit, with five chapters: the body and senses, healthy habits, living and non-living things, plants and animals. It is almost half of the book.

Unit 7 – earth and space (pages 99 onwards). Our Earth and Seasons and Weather finish the book; chapter 13 starts on page 108.

• Make a family tree on a sheet of paper with photographs or drawings (chapter 1).
• Walk around the neighbourhood and name the vehicles you see (chapter 6).
• Play "living or non-living?" with things at home (chapter 9).
• Plant a bean in a cup and watch it grow for chapter 10.
• Look out of the window every morning and note the weather for chapter 13.
