What is this book?
For a six-year-old this is the book that turns spoken Urdu into reading. It does it in two stages. The first 31 pages are a qaida, with the alphabet with pictures, the half forms of letters that appear in the middle of words, the heavy letters (like بھ، پھ، تھ), the vowel marks zabar, zer and pesh, jazm, tashdeed, tanween, noon ghunna, madd, hamza and the long-vowel letters waw and ya in their different roles, plus word building from these letters.
After the qaida, from page 32, come lessons: first the hamd and naat, then a lesson on the Prophet's kindness, and then lessons on manners, school, Allama Iqbal, the weather, honesty, Pakistan, road signals, healthy food, colours of the sky and a closing poem.
What the qaida teaches
The contents page lists the topics and learning outcomes of the qaida in two boxes. They include:
- letters of the alphabet with pictures, and their half forms;
- heavy (aspirated) letters;
- vowels and consonants (مصوتے اور مصمتے);
- word building (الفاظ سازی) from the letters learned, including words that start or end with a given sound;
- the vowel marks zabar, zer and pesh, plus jazm, tashdeed, tanween, noon ghunna and madd;
- the long-vowel letters waw and ya (ma'roof, layin, ma'dula) and hamza;
- visual words (بصری الفاظ), which the child learns to recognise at sight.
The learning outcomes say a child should recognise and use the sounds in reading words, build words with the help of letters and vowels, read words of four or more letters, recognise heavy sounds and tell the short vowel marks apart.

How the book is organised
Pages 1–31: sounds and letters. No lesson text yet; the child learns each letter's sound, shape and half form with a picture. Parents should expect homework on tracing and word-making in this part.
Lessons 1 to 5: praise and good manners. Hamd, naat, the Prophet's kindness, how to talk politely and a lesson about home. Review 1 comes right after lesson 4.
Lessons 6 to 12: school, nation and daily life. My school, Allama Iqbal, the seasons, honesty, Pakistan, traffic signals and a lesson that says it is fine to lose a game.
Lessons 13 to 16: nature and health. A poem about rain clouds, healthy food, colours in the sky and a last "wake up" poem, followed by the last review and the glossary.
Why this book?
- It is qaida and reader in one book, so a child does not need a separate primer for the first year.
- It follows the Single National Curriculum 2020; the cover says so in Urdu.
- Reviews after every few lessons let the school test small steps.
Who is it for, and when is it used?
Who: Class 1 children at Allied School and other schools that use AEP | Arvo Education Press books, and parents who help with first reading and handwriting. When: from the start of the school year. The qaida is normally covered in the first months and the lessons from page 32 after that. Why the page numbers matter: a class that has reached page 32 has finished the qaida, so you know when reading practice changes from letters to lessons.
How to help at home
- Say each letter's sound, then its name, then a word that starts with it.
- Write the letters with a finger on a tray of flour before using a pencil.
- Read one short hamd or naat line aloud every day.
- Cover the picture next to a word and ask your child to read the word first.
- Keep practice short: ten to fifteen minutes is better than an hour once a week.
