What is this book?
In Class 4 maths becomes more abstract. Maths Wise 4 meets that change with eight units that follow a classic order: whole numbers and operations, factors and multiples, fractions, decimals, geometry, measurement (length, mass, capacity, time and temperature), perimeter and area and data handling and probability.
The unit list is different from Classes 1 and 2: operations are no longer split into small units, because by Class 4 the child is expected to work with large numbers in all four operations. Instead the book adds factors and multiples (page 19) and decimals (page 42), the first real topics for Class 5 and 6 maths.
A Review and Assess section of 25 pages (109 to 133), answers (page 134) and a glossary (page 139) at the back make the book a complete self-study tool.

The units in four groups
Numbers (units 1 and 2, pages 1–27). Whole numbers and the four operations on large numbers, then factors and multiples. The factors and multiples unit is only nine pages, but it leads to HCF and LCM in Class 5, so it is worth learning well.
Fractions and decimals (units 3 and 4, pages 28–55). Fractions have 14 pages and decimals 14 pages. Children now compare, add and subtract them and link fractions to decimals.
Shapes and measures (units 5 to 7, pages 56–97). Geometry (15 pages), measurement of length, mass, capacity, time and temperature (17 pages) and, in a unit of its own, perimeter and area (10 pages).
Data and review (unit 8 onwards, pages 98–139). Data handling and probability, a 25-page review and assess section, and the answers.
Why this book?
- It is based on the National Curriculum of Pakistan, as the cover says.
- Perimeter and area have their own unit, which is good preparation for Class 5 and 6.
- A 25-page review helps in term and annual exam preparation.
- The answers and glossary at the back help a parent to check homework.
Who is it for, and when is it used?
Who: Class 4 (Grade 4) students in schools that use Oxford Maths Wise, and parents who help with homework. When: through the school year. Units 1 to 3 are usually the first term, units 4 to 6 the middle and units 7 and 8 and the review the last term.
