What is this book?
Math Understood is the "essential" maths course of Oxford: clean pages, a clear list of what a child must learn, and no extras. For Class 1 that means a short book of 95 pages with six units.
What makes the contents page special is that it prints the student learning outcomes (SLOs) under every unit. A parent can read them like a checklist: read and write numbers up to 99 in numerals and words, count forward and backwards up to 99, recognise the place value of a digit (tens and ones), add two 2-digit numbers, subtract a 1-digit number from a 2-digit number, identify Pakistani coins and notes, read time in hours from an analogue and a digital clock, name the days of the week and the solar and Islamic months and identify rectangle, square, circle and triangle.
The book is closely tied to Pakistan: money problems use rupees (Rs 1, 2, 5 and 10 coins, Rs 10, 20, 50 and 100 notes) and the unit on time asks children to name the Islamic months as well as the solar months.

The six units in three steps
Numbers and operations (units 1 and 2, pages 1–57). More than half of the book. Unit 1 (37 pages) is the longest because it builds from 0 to 99 and introduces place value; unit 2 (20 pages) covers addition and subtraction up to 2-digit numbers, with number stories and mental calculation.
Measuring and money (units 3 to 5, pages 58–84). Length and mass are compared with words (long, longer, longest; heavy, heavier, heaviest), then money (8 pages) and time (11 pages).
Shapes (unit 6, pages 85–95). Basic shapes, patterns and position words. A glossary and answers follow.
Why this book?
- The learning outcomes on the contents page show exactly what to learn.
- It uses Pakistani money and Islamic months, which are part of a child's daily life.
- It is short and focused, 95 pages, so it suits a six-year-old.
- Answers and a glossary at the back help parents.
Who is it for, and when is it used?
