What is this book?

By Class 2 a child should read a short lesson, answer questions, say a poem, learn new words and write a few sentences. Neela does all of these in a steady, child-friendly way. Each lesson has the same set of skills, shown as small coloured icons on the contents page: answering questions, talking about the topic, finding word meanings, grammar, reading with correct pronunciation, and a short piece of writing or a chart.

The lessons mix poems, stories, famous people and everyday topics: the Prophet's love for children, punctuality, the seashore, Allama Iqbal, the Quaid-e-Azam, exercise, the twelve months, the Sun, keeping the environment clean, planting trees, traffic and professions.

The book is divided into three parts, each closing with a review (جائزہ): lessons 1 to 6, 7 to 12 and 13 to 17. A review is a good time to look back at poems learned, new words and grammar points, and to practise before the term test.

Helping a Class 2 child with Urdu at home

Read each lesson aloud together, then let your child read a paragraph. Ask them to tell the lesson back in their own words. Learn the poems one line at a time. Practise the new words with flash cards, and let your child make a sentence with each. Even if you do not read Urdu fluently, listening to your child read aloud and showing interest is a big help.
