What is this book?
The "ladder" idea is simple: a Class 1 child climbs one step at a time from sounds and sight words to simple sentences. Each of the ten units has a story or reading text built around a theme (the Prophet's kindness, my family, home, caring for animals, colours, seasons, cleanliness, living things, a national hero, gratitude), and then four skills strands: reading and critical thinking, vocabulary and grammar, oral communication and writing.
The contents page is a skills map, which means a parent can see for every unit which letter sounds, sight words, grammar points and writing skills are practised.

The ladder in two halves
Units 1 to 5 – sounds, words and first sentences. The strongest focus is on pencil grip, handwriting, letter sounds, sight words and naming, action and describing words. Role play begins in Unit 1, so even a shy child speaks early. Review 1 on page 67 checks the half.
Units 6 to 10 – sentences and paragraphs. From requests and commands the book moves to days and months, alphabetical order, commas in a list, the dictionary and finally topic and concluding sentences. By Unit 10 the child works with parts of a book and reads for information.
Why this book?
- The skills map shows exactly what each unit trains: this is useful for homework help.
- The themes are close to a child's life (family, home, colours, seasons, cleanliness) and include role models such as the Prophet (peace be upon him) and Pilot Officer Rashid Minhas Shaheed.
- It follows the Single National Curriculum 2020, as the cover says.
Who is it for, and when is it used?
Who: Class 1 pupils (Grade 1) at Allied School and other schools that use AEP | Arvo Education Press books. When: through the school year. Many classes finish Unit 5 and Review 1 before the mid-year tests. Page numbers: units begin on pages 1, 10, 24, 39, 54, 72, 84, 99, 114 and 128, so Unit 2 is the first short unit and Unit 7 to 10 are longer.
How to help at home
- Practise a few sight words each day on flash cards.
- Let your child hold the pencil correctly and write on lined paper with spaces between words (Units 1 and 2).
- Read a short rhyme together and clap the beats (Unit 3).
- Ask your child to say "a" or "an" in front of objects you point to.
- Talk about a family member or a hero, then write one sentence about him or her.
