What is this book?
This is the Class 8 (Stage 8) book of the Checkpoint maths series and it is built to match the Cambridge Lower Secondary Mathematics curriculum framework. The contents page says so and adds a useful colour key: red for Number, purple for Geometry and Measure, green for Statistics and Probability and blue for Algebra. A parent can see at once which topics are algebra and which are statistics.
The units are short and each has one clear idea. Section 1 begins with multiplication and division and the hierarchy of quadrilaterals, passes through data collection and sampling methods, parallelograms, trapezia and circles, order of operations, expressions, formulae and equations and properties of three-dimensional shapes, and ends with factors and multiples and complementary events. Section 2 covers decimals and place value, comparing and interpreting data, transformation of 2D shapes, fractions and decimals, algebraic expressions, combined events, constructions, lines and angles, probability experiments and equations and inequalities. Section 3 covers sequences, percentage increases and decreases, 2D representations of 3D shapes, functions, geometry and translations, squares, cubes and roots, straight-line graphs, distances and bearings, ratio and graphs.
Each section ends with a Section Review (pages 93, 192 and 261), which is a built-in revision test.

The three sections in short
Section 1 (pages 2–94). Ten units. The first half of the year is about number work (multiplication and division, order of operations, factors and multiples), the shapes of geometry (quadrilaterals, circles, 3D shapes) and the first data and probability topics.
Section 2 (pages 96–193). Ten units. Decimals and fractions, data comparison, transformations, algebraic expressions and equations, probability experiments and constructions. Unit 17 (constructions, lines and angles) is the longest at 22 pages.
Section 3 (pages 196–262). Ten units. Sequences, percentage change, functions, translations, roots, straight-line graphs, bearings, ratio and graph reading.
The book closes with a glossary (page 264) and an index (page 269), which makes revision easier.
Why this book?
- It is endorsed by Cambridge for full syllabus coverage and matches the Lower Secondary framework.
- The colour-coded units show whether a topic is Number, Geometry & Measure, Statistics & Probability or Algebra.

How to help at home
- Use the colour key to find the weakest strand and practise it first.
- Do the Section Review at the end of each section as a mock test.
- Make a formula page for algebra (units 6, 15, 18 and 20).
- Practise constructions with a compass and a protractor (unit 17).
- Look up each new maths word in the glossary and write it in a notebook.
