Pakistan: History, Culture, and Government (3rd Edition) by Umar Khan Dawar and Nigel Smith, published by Oxford University Press, is written to the syllabus for Paper 1 of Cambridge O-Level Pakistan Studies (2059) and IGCSE Pakistan Studies (0448). It is structured around the actual inquiry questions O-Level examiners ask — "how", "why" and "how far" — rather than a flat chronological narrative, which is exactly how Paper 1 answers need to be built. We stock it for O Level and IGCSE students sitting Paper 1 in the 2027 and 2028 exam series.
What is covered
- Section 1 — The Making of Pakistan, 1857–1947: How did differing views emerge on the governance of India? Why was there no agreement on how India should be governed 1927–1939? Why did the move to independence lead to the formation of Pakistan in 1947?
- Section 2 — The Shaping of Pakistan since 1947: How were the new nation's difficulties overcome by 1971? How was economic and social progress achieved 1947–1999? How was a democratic constitution achieved by 1973?
- Section 3 — Pakistan and the Global Community: How has Pakistan developed as a member of the global community? How has Pakistan's foreign policy developed, looking both west and east? Why are relations with India, Afghanistan and the Gulf States important today?
- Section 4 — Society and Culture in Pakistan: How do the arts and sport shape Pakistan's cultural identity? How does Pakistan use its diversity to shape cultural unity? How is Pakistan building an equitable society?
Every section closes with its own Exam Practice pages, so students move straight from learning the content to answering it in the exact style Paper 1 demands.
Using this book in the 2027-28 session
Cambridge O Level Pakistan Studies (2059) is examined in the June and November series. Students who sit Paper 1 in 2027 follow the current 2059 syllabus. Cambridge has published a new 2059 syllabus for exams in 2028, 2029 and 2030, so if you sit in 2028, compare its Paper 1 topics with this book (your teacher has the change list) and ask us on WhatsApp for the newest print. IGCSE (0448) candidates should check the 0448 syllabus for their exam year in the same way.
