What is the A Level Physics Paper 1 Topical Worked Solutions book?
It is a large practice book for the AS Level multiple-choice paper. The questions are grouped by topic — kinematics, dynamics, waves, circuits and so on — and each unit is split into numbered sub-topics (for example 3.1 Equations of motion or 11.2 Kirchhoff’s laws). Most units end with a “Multiple topics” set, where questions from the unit’s different sub-topics are mixed together, as they are in a real paper.
What makes this book different from a plain answer key is the pair of sections after each unit: an Answers Section (the correct options) and Solutions (the worked reasoning). A student who picks the wrong option can read the solution and learn the method instead of just seeing the letter.
Who is this book for?
- AS Level Physics students preparing for Paper 1.
- A Level students who need a strong AS foundation, because AS content is part of the full A Level.
- Students who find multiple-choice physics tricky and want to learn how the options are built.
- Private candidates who study without a teacher and need worked solutions.
- Teachers and tutors who need a topic-wise MCQ bank.
- Parents who want one book that covers the whole Paper 1 syllabus.

What each unit covers
Unit 1 — Physical Quantities and Units. Estimating sizes and orders of magnitude, SI base and derived units, and scalars and vectors (adding vectors and resolving them into components).
Unit 2 — Measurement Techniques. Reading instruments such as the micrometer screw gauge and vernier calipers, and handling errors and uncertainties (absolute, fractional and percentage uncertainty, and how they combine).
Unit 3 — Kinematics. The equations of motion for constant acceleration, displacement–time and velocity–time graphs, and projectile motion.
Unit 4 — Dynamics. Newton’s laws of motion, non-uniform motion such as drag and terminal velocity, and linear momentum and its conservation in collisions.
Unit 5 — Forces, Density and Pressure. Types of force (weight, upthrust, friction and more), turning effects and moments, equilibrium of forces, density and pressure in fluids.
Unit 6 — Work, Energy and Power. Conservation of energy, work done and efficiency, gravitational potential energy and kinetic energy, and power.
Unit 7 — Deformation of Solids. Stress and strain, the Young modulus, elastic and plastic behaviour and elastic potential energy.
Unit 8 — Waves. Progressive waves, transverse and longitudinal waves, finding frequency and wavelength of sound, the Doppler effect and the electromagnetic spectrum.
Unit 9 — Superposition. Stationary waves, diffraction, two-source interference, diffraction gratings and polarisation.
Unit 10 — Current of Electricity. Electric current, potential difference and power, resistance and resistivity.
Unit 11 — D.C Circuits. Practical circuits, Kirchhoff’s laws and potential dividers.
Unit 12 — Particle and Nuclear Physics. Atoms, nuclei and radiation, and fundamental particles.
Why use topical worked solutions for Paper 1?
- Multiple-choice questions look easy and are not. The wrong options are designed from common mistakes; reading a worked solution shows you which mistake each option hides.
- Topic by topic. You can strengthen one unit at a time instead of waiting for a full mock.
- Mixed sets at the end of each unit. The “Multiple topics” sets train you to switch between ideas quickly, as Paper 1 demands.
- Answers and solutions are separate. First check only the answer; if you were wrong, read the solution.
- The whole AS syllabus in one book. Twelve units cover the Paper 1 content from start to finish.
When should you use it?
- During the AS year: after each topic is taught in class, do the matching sub-topic.
- Before mock exams: finish the “Multiple topics” set of every unit.
- In the last month: redo the questions you got wrong and read their solutions again.
- Exam series: Cambridge holds its exams in May/June and October/November; plan to finish the book at least a month before your series.
How do you use this book? A simple plan
- Choose a sub-topic from the contents, for example 9.2 Stationary waves (page 455).
- Answer the questions in a fixed time, about 1 minute 50 seconds per question (75 minutes for 40 questions), to match the real paper’s pace.
- Check only the Answers Section of the unit (for Unit 9 it starts on page 526).
- For every wrong answer read the Solutions (Unit 9 solutions start on page 528) and write the key idea in one line.
- Redo the wrong questions after a few days.
- At the end of a unit, attempt its “Multiple topics” set as a timed test.
Why does the cover show 9709?
The front cover of this edition prints the code “9709”. That is the Cambridge code for Mathematics. The contents inside — physical quantities, kinematics, dynamics, waves, circuits and nuclear physics — are Physics topics, and the Cambridge syllabus code for AS & A Level Physics is 9702. The title and the contents are the reliable guide: this is the Physics Paper 1 book.
How is Paper 1 different from Paper 2?
Paper 1 is multiple choice (40 questions, 40 marks); Paper 2 is the AS Level structured-question paper (60 marks) where students write full answers. They test the same AS content in different ways, so many students use both. The same publisher prints a Paper 2 workbook — see the A Level Physics Paper 2 (Structured) Topical Workbook. The covers are colour-coded: Paper 1 is blue and Paper 2 is orange.
Using it for the 2027 and 2028 exams (9702 syllabus check)
Cambridge AS & A Level Physics (9702) has one syllabus for the 2025, 2026 and 2027 exams and a new syllabus for exams in 2028, 2029 and 2030. If you sit Paper 1 in the June or November 2027 series, the units in this book follow the syllabus you are taught. If you sit it in 2028, compare the new syllabus with the contents (your teacher has the change list); topic-by-topic past-paper practice stays the core of your preparation in both years. Ask us on WhatsApp for the newest print before you order.
Is this the original book?
The cover carries a colour-changing security label; the publisher says that a label which does not change colour when tilted means a pirated copy. The cover also has a “Scan for price” QR code. Ask us to show you the label when you collect your copy.

Frequently asked questions
Is this book suitable for the 2027 and 2028 exams?
Yes, for practice in both years. 9702 uses one syllabus for the 2025–2027 exams and a new one for 2028–2030, so 2028 candidates should check the syllabus changes with their teacher.
