Barg-e-Gul – A Level Urdu Anthology (Poetry, Stories & Drama) 2027-28

برگِ گل (Barg-e-Gul), published by Book Land, Lahore, is the set-text anthology prepared for the Cambridge International A-Level Urdu (9686) examinations for centres in Pakistan (edition covering examinations 2023–2026). Rather than one long text, it collects the actual short poems, short stories and one full drama that the syllabus asks students to study — which is exactly why it is one of our most requested A-Level Urdu titles. Students of the 2027-28 session should read the note below: Cambridge A Level Urdu changes its syllabus from 2027.

What is inside

نظمیں (Poetry): a curated set of classic and modern Urdu nazmein grouped by poet, including some of Urdu's most anthologised verses — among them Faiz Ahmed Faiz's "مجھے پہلی سی محبت میری محبوب نہ مانگ" and Sahir Ludhianvi's "تاج محل" — alongside ghazals, poems on selfhood (خودی) and reflections on life and society from a range of major 20th-century Urdu poets.

افسانے (Short Stories): a set of landmark Urdu short fiction, including Munshi Premchand's "عید گاہ" (Eidgah), Saadat Hasan Manto's "گرم کوٹ" (Garam Coat), and stories by Qurat-ul-Ain Haider and Ghulam Abbas — giving students a genuine cross-section of the Urdu short-story tradition, not just one writer's style.

ڈراما (Drama): "انارکلی" by Imtiaz Ali Taj — the same celebrated verse-drama we also stock as a standalone edition (see our Anarkali listing), included here as the anthology's set-text play.

Who this is for

Every Cambridge A-Level Urdu (9686) candidate up to the 2026 exams needs this anthology or an equivalent collection of the same set texts — it is the single most practical way to have every required poem, story and the drama in one volume.
