What is the A Level Mathematics Paper 1 Topical Past Papers book?
It is a collection of Paper 1 practice questions sorted by topic. Instead of one paper after another, you get a unit on quadratics, then a unit on functions, and so on, so you can practise the exact skill you are working on this week. Each unit is followed by its own answers section.
Paper 1 (Pure Mathematics 1) is the foundation of Cambridge A Level Mathematics. It is compulsory for students who take the AS Level and for those who go on to the full A Level, so almost every 9709 candidate needs strong Paper 1 skills. The book’s eight units are exactly the Paper 1 topics: quadratics; functions and transformation graph; coordinate geometry; circular measure; trigonometry; series; differentiation; integration.
Who is this book for?
- AS Level students (first year) preparing for Paper 1.
- A Level students (second year) who need to refresh Pure Mathematics 1 before they move to Paper 3 and the mechanics and statistics papers.
- Private candidates and O Level students who are moving up to A Level mathematics and want an early start on the Paper 1 topics.
- Teachers and tutors who want a topic-wise question bank for a class.
- Parents who want to see what their child will practise in Paper 1.

What each unit covers
Unit 1 — Quadratics. Solving quadratic equations, completing the square, the discriminant and the nature of roots, quadratic inequalities and simultaneous equations where one equation is quadratic.
Unit 2 — Functions and Transformation Graph (2.1 Functions, 2.2 Transformation). Domain and range, composite functions, inverse functions, and how the graph of a function moves or changes shape under translations, reflections and stretches.
Unit 3 — Coordinate Geometry. Gradient, midpoint and distance, the equation of a straight line, parallel and perpendicular lines, and the equation of a circle with its tangents and intersections.
Unit 4 — Circular Measure. Radians, arc length and the area of a sector, and problems that combine triangles and circles.
Unit 5 — Trigonometry. The graphs of sine, cosine and tangent, trigonometric identities, and solving trigonometric equations within a given range.
Unit 6 — Series (6.1 Binomial expansion, 6.2 Arithmetic and geometric progressions). Expanding brackets with the binomial theorem, and the formulae for the terms and sums of arithmetic and geometric progressions, including the sum to infinity.
Unit 7 — Differentiation. Gradients of curves, tangents and normals, stationary points and their nature, increasing and decreasing functions, and rates of change.
Unit 8 — Integration. Reversing differentiation, finding a curve from its gradient, the area under a curve and between curves, and volumes of revolution.
Why use topical past papers for Paper 1?
- Real exam-style practice. The cover calls the book “Topical Past Papers”, so you practise on questions of the kind that appear in Paper 1.
- Weak topics get fixed first. Pick the unit you find hardest, finish it, then move on.
- Instant feedback. Each unit has an answers section, so you know straight away whether your method worked.
- The whole syllabus in one place. Eight units cover every Paper 1 topic, from quadratics to integration.
- Speed. Repeating one topic many times makes your algebra faster, and speed is what Paper 1 rewards.
When should you use it?
- Alongside the class: do the matching unit after your teacher finishes a chapter.
- Before mock exams: go through all eight units once, starting with the weakest.
- In the last month: redo only the questions you got wrong.
- Exam series: Cambridge holds its exams in May/June and October/November; plan to finish the book at least a month before your series.
How do you use this book? A simple plan
- Pick one unit from the contents page, for example Unit 6 Series (page 220).
- Work through the questions on paper, showing every step.
- Check with the unit’s answers section (for Unit 6 it starts on page 247).
- Mark each mistake as a method error, an algebra slip or a misread question.
- Redo the wrong questions two days later without looking at the answers.
- Move to the next unit only when you can finish a page with no new mistakes.
How is Paper 1 different from Paper 3?
Paper 1 (Pure Mathematics 1) covers the AS-level pure topics listed above. Paper 3 (Pure Mathematics 3) is the next step: algebra with partial fractions, logarithmic and exponential functions, numerical solution of equations, vectors, differential equations and complex numbers. The same publisher also prints a Paper 3 book — see the A Level Mathematics Paper 3 (P3) Topical Past Papers. The two covers are colour-coded (Paper 1 is blue, Paper 3 is green), which makes it easy to pick the right one.
Using it for the 2027 and 2028 exams (9709 syllabus check)
Cambridge AS & A Level Mathematics (9709) has one syllabus for the 2026 and 2027 exams and a new syllabus for exams in 2028, 2029 and 2030. If you sit Paper 1 in the June or November 2027 series, the units in this book follow the syllabus you are taught. If you sit it in 2028, compare the new syllabus with the contents (your teacher has the change list); topic-by-topic past-paper practice stays the core of your preparation in both years. Ask us on WhatsApp for the newest print before you order.
Is this the original book?
The cover carries a colour-changing security label; the publisher says that if the label does not change colour when tilted, the copy is pirated. The cover also has a “Scan for price” QR code. Ask us to show you the label when you collect your copy.
