A Level Mathematics Paper 3 (Pure Mathematics 3) Topical Past Papers (9709) from Read & Write Publications is a topic-by-topic question book for the second-year pure mathematics paper of Cambridge A Level. Its nine units run from algebra to complex numbers — logarithmic and exponential functions, trigonometry, differentiation, integration, numerical solution of equations, vectors and differential equations in between — and each unit ends with its own answers section. It fits students of the 2027-28 session who sit Paper 3 in the 2027 or 2028 Cambridge series.

What is the A Level Mathematics Paper 3 Topical Past Papers book?
It is a collection of Paper 3 practice questions sorted by topic. Paper 3 (Pure Mathematics 3) is usually taken in the second year of the A Level and builds on the Paper 1 material, so the algebra, trigonometry, differentiation and integration here are used at a higher level than in Paper 1, and new topics — numerical methods, vectors, differential equations and complex numbers — are added.
Because the questions are grouped by topic, a student can spend a week on one unit, for example Unit 5 Integration, and then check the work with the unit’s answers section. The cover calls the book “Topical Past Papers”, so the practice is based on the kind of questions that appear in the real paper.
Who is this book for?
- A Level students (second year) who are preparing for Paper 3.
- Students who want a high grade in A Level Mathematics, because Paper 3 is worth 75 marks, as much as Paper 1.
- Private candidates and repeaters who need a clear unit-by-unit plan.
- Teachers and tutors who run a Paper 3 class and need topic-wise question banks.
- Parents who want to know what their child will study in the final year.

What each unit covers
Unit 1 — Algebra (1.1 Equations and inequalities, 1.2 Remainder and factor theorem, 1.3 Partial fractions and binomial expansions). Solving equations and inequalities that involve the modulus, dividing polynomials, using the remainder and factor theorems, splitting an expression into partial fractions and expanding with the binomial series.
Unit 2 — Logarithmic and Exponential Functions. Laws of logarithms, equations with exponentials and logarithms, the natural logarithm and the exponential function, and turning curved relationships into straight lines for graphs.
Unit 3 — Trigonometry. The reciprocal functions secant, cosecant and cotangent, addition and double-angle formulae and expressions of the form R cos(θ ± α), with their use in solving equations.
Unit 4 — Differentiation. The product, quotient and chain rules, derivatives of exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions, and implicit and parametric differentiation.
Unit 5 — Integration. Standard integrals, integration by substitution and by parts, integrating with partial fractions, and areas under curves.
Unit 6 — Numerical Solution of Equations. Showing that a root lies in an interval and finding it with an iterative formula.
Unit 7 — Vectors. Vectors in three dimensions, the equation of a line, the scalar product and angles, and whether two lines meet.
Unit 8 — Differential Equations. Forming a differential equation from a situation, and solving it by separating the variables.
Unit 9 — Complex Numbers. The Argand diagram, the modulus and argument, operations on complex numbers and loci in the complex plane.
Why use topical past papers for Paper 3?
- Paper 3 is wide. Nine units are a lot to revise; a topical book lets you take them one at a time.
- Answers after every unit. You can mark the work at once and see whether your method is right.
- Question styles repeat. Practising one topic many times teaches you the usual steps for substitution, partial fractions or a differential equation.
- It stops you leaving the hardest units until the end. Complex numbers or vectors can be started months earlier.
- One book for the whole paper. The contents show all nine units in order.
When should you use it?
- In the second year of A Level: begin each unit when your teacher starts the same topic in class.
- After you finish Paper 1 revision: Paper 3 uses Paper 1 skills, so a quick Paper 1 refresh first makes this book easier.
- Mock exams: go through all nine units once and mark the weakest three.
- Exam series: Cambridge holds its exams in May/June and October/November; plan to finish the book at least a month before.
How do you use this book? A simple plan
- Open the contents and choose a unit — for example Unit 8 Differential Equations (page 321).
- Attempt the questions on paper and show all the steps.
- Check your answers in the unit’s answers section (for Unit 8 it starts on page 343).
- Write each mistake in a notebook: method, algebra or reading error.
- Redo the wrong questions after two or three days.
- Move on once a full page comes out correct without help.
How is Paper 3 different from Paper 1?
Paper 1 (Pure Mathematics 1) covers quadratics, functions, coordinate geometry, circular measure, trigonometry, series, differentiation and integration. Paper 3 goes further with partial fractions, logarithmic and exponential functions, numerical solution of equations, vectors, differential equations and complex numbers. If you also need Paper 1, see the A Level Mathematics Paper 1 (P1) Topical Past Papers. The covers are colour-coded: Paper 1 is blue and Paper 3 is green.
Using it for the 2027 and 2028 exams (9709 syllabus check)
Cambridge AS & A Level Mathematics (9709) has one syllabus for the 2026 and 2027 exams and a new syllabus for exams in 2028, 2029 and 2030. If you sit Paper 3 in the June or November 2027 series, the units in this book follow the syllabus you are taught. If you sit it in 2028, compare the new syllabus with the contents (your teacher has the change list); topic-by-topic past-paper practice stays the core of your preparation in both years. Ask us on WhatsApp for the newest print before you order.
Is this the original book?
The cover carries a colour-changing security label; the publisher says that a label which does not change colour when tilted means a pirated copy. The cover also has a “Scan for price” QR code. Ask us to show you the label when you collect your copy.
