What is this book?
Cambridge Primary English Learner's Book 1 is built for children who are learning to read and write in English. Every unit follows the same simple path: read a story, rhyme or non-fiction text, check that you understood it, retell it, explore the language and then write. The unit titles show the variety: stories (The Bike Race, Chicken Licken, Lizzie Locks, The Runaway Chapati, How to Catch a Star), instructions (labels, signs, recipes), rhymes (number rhymes, funny rhymes, silly rhymes), non-fiction (contents pages, indexes, glossaries, dictionaries, A to Z texts), make-believe stories and recounts (a diary, a letter, Our Healthy Week).
The pages are lesson by lesson. For example unit 1 has twelve lessons, from The Bike Race (page 6) to Think about Bear, Hedgehog and Dragon stories (page 24), with a Unit 1 Review on page 25. Unit 2 teaches reading and writing labels, signs and instructions, ending with a Unit 2 Review on page 41. Each unit ends with a review, so a parent and a teacher can see progress.
The book is part of the Complete Cambridge programme and is endorsed by Cambridge International for the full syllabus. It uses a friendly duck character who appears on the Stage 1 cover.

The nine units in three steps
Units 1 to 3 (pages 6–53). Friends, finding out and rhymes. Children read a story, learn to read labels and signs, follow and write simple instructions and play with rhymes. These units build the first reading habits.
Units 4 to 6 (pages 54–105). Traditional stories, non-fiction and a second rhyme unit. Children predict and retell stories, use a contents page, an index, a glossary and a dictionary and write a first report.
Units 7 to 9 (pages 106–151). Make-believe stories, recounts and theme poems. The writing becomes longer: a make-believe story, a diary, a recount and a descriptive poem.
The book closes with a Review and reference section (page 152) that collects the days, colours, numbers, sounds, common words, rhymes and punctuation of the year.
Why this book?
- It follows the read, check, retell, explore and write path in every unit.
- It mixes stories, rhymes, instructions and non-fiction, so children meet many kinds of text.
- Every unit ends with a review, and the book has a review and reference section.
- It is the first book of a series that continues to Stage 6, so the style stays familiar.
