What is this book?
By Class 2 a child should be reading simple stories alone, and Level 8 gives them stories with real plots: a trip to London, a mystery and a bigger cast. New friends, Nadim and Anneena, join Biff, Chip and Kipper. According to the publisher's Pakistan catalogue, the Level 8 stories include The Flying Carpet, The Kidnappers, A Day in London and The Rainbow Machine, and this school edition gathers four of them in one volume.
The stories are written to be fun, which is the best way to build the habit of reading.
What the first pages tell us
The book opens with a guide for parents and teachers. The page we photographed belongs to the story A Day in London, and it asks the adult to:
- Before reading: read the title and look at the cover picture, ask who is in the car (Gran, Chip, Biff, Kipper, Nadim and Anneena), read the back cover blurb and ask what the children might go to see in London and what might go wrong.
- About the words: the child will probably be able to read most words; encourage sounding out and blending the challenging ones (pigeons, heights, because, brought).
- During reading: break unfamiliar words into chunks or syllables (for example e-nor-mous), blend from left to right, say the whole word if it is too tricky, and re-read sentences to focus on meaning.
Questions to ask after each story
- Who was in the car in A Day in London? Who was your favourite?
- What did the children go to see in London, and what went wrong?
- Find a long word and break it into chunks, like e-nor-mous. Now try pigeons or heights.
- How did Biff, Chip and Kipper solve the problem at the end?
- Have you ever been to a big city? What was the busiest or loudest thing you saw?
- If you could add one more passenger to the car, who would you choose, and why?
The Army Public School reading ladder

What changes from Class 1 to Class 2
Level 8 introduces a skill that earlier guides did not mention: breaking unfamiliar words into chunks or syllables to work them out. This is how mature readers handle long words, and it helps spelling too. The child must also follow a longer, multi-scene story and keep track of several characters. Ask your child to retell the story in three sentences: beginning, middle and end.
Why this book?
- Real plots and a bigger cast keep a seven-year-old reading.
- Breaking words into syllables is a new and useful skill.
- The right level for Class 2: the cover says "For Grade 2".
Who is it for, and when is it used?
It is for Class 2 children at Army Public Schools, about seven years old. It is used as home reading throughout the year. Let the child read aloud for ten minutes, ask what they think will happen next, and talk about the pictures. Good places are at home, in the car or in the library corner.
How to help at home
- Read aloud for ten minutes a day and talk about the story.
- Ask your child to predict what will happen next.
- Practise splitting long words into chunks.
- Draw a map of the day in London.
- Ask for a three-sentence retelling at the end.
