What is Cambridge Global English Workbook 1?
Cambridge Global English is the Cambridge University Press English course written for the Cambridge Primary English as a Second Language curriculum. The Workbook is the write-in book that goes with the Learner's Book: children practise the new words, the sounds and the sentence patterns of each lesson by colouring, matching, tracing and writing.
The units follow topics a six-year-old knows: the classroom, family time, games, making things, the farm, the five senses, travel, the city and water. Each unit also teaches one sound pattern (short a, short u, short e, short i, short o, long e, -y endings, long a) and ends with a story lesson and a progress check.
Who should buy this workbook?
- Class 1 students in Cambridge-system and English-medium schools that use Global English.
- Parents who want to see exactly what their child practises each week.
- Tutors who need ready-made phonics and vocabulary practice for Class 1.

What your child practises
- Phonics and spelling: the alphabet (1.5), short a, u, e, i and o (2.5, 3.5, 4.5, 5.5, 6.5), long e spelt ee (7.5), -y endings (8.5) and long a spelt ai and ay (9.5).
- Grammar for beginners: possessions ("This is my friend"), "Where is the duck?", describing things (7.4) and "This or these?" (8.4).
- Reading stories and poems: The Ker-PLUNK, The Elves and the Shoemaker, The Little Red Hen, Five Friends and the Elephant, Sing a Song of People and The Song of the Toad.
- Cross-curricular topics: counting (2.3), life cycles (5.3), the five senses, vehicles, and facts about water and things that float — so English is linked to maths and science.
- Self-check: nine "Check your progress" lessons, one per unit.
When and how to use it
Most Class 1 classes cover about one unit a month. At home, do one workbook lesson after the matching Learner's Book lesson: read the instructions aloud, let your child answer, then check together. Use the "Check your progress" page as a mini-test before the monthly assessment.
