What is the story?
Harry Potter has lived since he was a baby with his aunt, uncle and cousin, who treat him badly, make him sleep in a cupboard under the stairs and never tell him the truth about his parents. Just before his eleventh birthday, letters start to arrive for him, and then a huge man named Hagrid arrives to tell Harry something amazing: his parents were a witch and a wizard, and he is famous in the magical world for surviving an attack by the dark wizard Voldemort.
Harry goes shopping for a wand and a pet owl in Diagon Alley, catches a train from Platform Nine and Three-Quarters, and starts at Hogwarts. He makes friends with Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, is sorted into a house by the Sorting Hat, plays a new sport called Quidditch, and finds out that something dangerous is hidden in the castle. Over a year of lessons, rivalries and discoveries, the three friends begin to follow a trail that leads to the secret of the Philosopher's Stone and a final encounter at the end of the book.
It is a story about friendship, courage and finding where you belong. It is also an old-fashioned school story, a mystery and a fantasy all in one, and that mix is why it has been read by so many children and adults.

The book in four stages
- Before Hogwarts (chapters 1 to 4, pages 1 to 65). The Dursleys, the letters and Hagrid's arrival. This section sets up Harry's world and builds up the curiosity.
- Getting ready (chapters 5 and 6, pages 66 to 120). Shopping for school and the train journey. Readers meet Ron and begin to see the magical world.
- First term (chapters 7 to 11, pages 121 to 207). The Sorting Hat, the Potions Master, a midnight duel, Hallowe'en and the first Quidditch match. This is the cosy school-story part of the book, with some real danger.
- The mystery (chapters 12 to 17, pages 208 to 310 and beyond). The Mirror of Erised, Nicolas Flamel, a baby dragon, the Forbidden Forest and the trapdoor lead to the last chapter and the answer to the secret.
Who should read it?
- Students in Classes 5 to 8. The language is straightforward, and the length (over 300 pages) is a good challenge for a confident reader.
- Younger children can enjoy it as a read-aloud from about Class 3.
- Parents who want a long, absorbing book that will help a child build reading stamina.
- English teachers looking for a novel to teach plot, setting and characters, and for creative writing tasks such as "My first day at Hogwarts".
Why read it?
It is an excellent confidence-builder for readers who think long books are too hard, because once they get through the first few chapters, they cannot stop. It has a strong set of characters whom children come to care about. The mystery plot makes readers pay attention to small details, and the school setting is something everyone can relate to. Finally, the book has had such an influence on modern English that reading it helps you understand many references in conversation and in other books.
When and how to use it
Set a daily target, such as ten pages. Draw a map of Hogwarts as you go. After chapter 7, ask your child which house they would like to be in, and why. After the final chapter, write a letter to Harry from a new student in the next year. If a child has seen the film, ask them to list the differences between the film and the book, which is a good way to practise careful reading.
