What is the story?
The story opens at a pool in the forest of Narnia, where Shift the ape, a cunning old schemer, finds a lion's skin floating in the water. He persuades his simple friend Puzzle the donkey to wear the skin and pretends that Puzzle is Aslan, the great lion who has ruled Narnia since its creation. With this trick, Shift gets control of the talking animals, uses their fear and respect for Aslan to make them work for foreign soldiers from the south, and begins to cut down the sacred trees.
King Tirian, the last king of Narnia, hears the news and sets out to put it right. Along the way, he is helped by two old friends from the earlier books, Eustace and Jill, who are called back from the real world. Together they face a battle against enemies who have power, numbers and a false god. But the book is about much more than a battle: it asks what real loyalty looks like, why it is dangerous to believe in whatever suits you, and what happens when something very old comes to an end.
The final chapters give the reader a long moment of beauty and meaning. Without giving the ending away, it is fair to say that the last pages are as hopeful as the book is dark. They leave many readers moved.

The book in four stages
- The trick at the pool (chapters 1 to 3, pages 7 to 47). Shift finds the skin, and the ape's plan takes shape. The king hears of it and acts too quickly.
- Help and rescue (chapters 4 to 8, pages 48 to 114). A night of trouble, unexpected help for the king and a sharp chapter about dwarfs who trust nobody. An eagle brings important news.
- The great meeting and the stable (chapters 9 to 13, pages 115 to 183). The ape's big scheme meets its test at Stable Hill. The stable door leads somewhere that few expected.
- The end of Narnia, and what comes after (chapters 14 to 16, pages 184 to 211). Night falls and the series reaches its conclusion in "Farther Up and Farther In" and "Farewell to Shadowlands".
Who should read it?
- Students in Classes 6 to 9. It is the most serious book in the series, so it is best for readers who are comfortable with a darker tone.
- Readers who have followed the series. It is the finale, with returning characters and references to earlier events. Reading the other books first will make this one richer.
- Parents who want to give a thoughtful child something to think about: faith, trust, false leaders and loyalty.
- Teachers looking for a text on propaganda, deception and standing up for the truth. The trickery of Shift is an easy example of how someone might manipulate others.
Why read it?
It brings the series to a proper close. Many long series fade out, but this one deliberately ends. It asks real questions about leaders who lie and about people who let themselves be tricked. And it has a final vision that many readers say they remember long after they have forgotten the plot. It is also a rare children's book that treats death and endings seriously without being cruel.
Reading order and other Narnia books
The last book is best read last. Our other Narnia titles in this selection are:
- The Magician's Nephew (Book 1), the beginning of the world.
- The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (Book 2), the best-known entrance to Narnia.
- The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (Book 5), where Eustace changes.
Other books in the series (for example Prince Caspian, The Silver Chair, The Horse and His Boy) can be ordered by WhatsApp; tell us which ones you need.
When and how to use it
Do not rush. Read a chapter at a time and talk about it, especially chapters 3, 7 and 13. After chapter 9, ask your child: "Why do some characters believe the ape?" At the end, a short piece of writing about the book's last chapters, "What I think happens next", is a good exercise in inference.
